MedSpace Aesthetics

If there’s a half-used retinol in your bathroom cabinet right now, you’re in good company, most patients we see have tried one. However, very few were ever told which one, how strong, or why.

Retinol is a form of vitamin A. It works by speeding up skin cell turnover and supporting collagen, which over time shows up as smoother texture, more even tone, softer fine lines, fewer congested patches and skin that looks like it’s had a full night’s sleep, even when it hasn’t.

There are many forms of retinol and the result depends almost entirely on formulation.

Why two retinols are never the same

The percentage on the front of the bottle tells you very little on its own. Retinol is a notoriously unstable ingredient. Light and air break it down, so a poorly formulated product can lose much of its strength long before you reach the bottom of the bottle.

What actually decides whether it works is how it’s made. Is the retinol encapsulated so it releases slowly through the night rather than all at once? Is it paired with calming, barrier-supporting ingredients so your skin can tolerate it consistently? Is it packaged to protect it? That’s the difference between a retinol you give up on after three weeks and one that quietly changes your skin over three months.

This is why, at MedSpace Aesthetics we stock ZO Skin Health and Obagi. Both are medical-grade ranges built around delivery, stability and strength, with retinols that come in graded steps so your routine can progress as your skin adapts. No guessing, no starting over with a new bottle every few months.

Start low, go slow

More isn’t always better with retinol. Most skin does best starting with a couple of evenings a week and building up gradually. A little dryness or sensitivity in the early weeks is normal, and it’s exactly why the right strength from day one matters so much.

Daily spf is non-negotiable alongside it. Retinol is renewing your skin, and SPF protects all that work.

If you’re pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding, retinol isn’t for now, and there are brilliant alternatives we can talk you through.

Assess first, then choose

At MedSpace Aesthetics, your skin is assessed properly first. From there, we choose the right retinol, the right strength and the right routine, and adjust it as your skin changes, so it’s one less thing on your list to figure out.
